Long Fighting Stance

Zenkutsu Dachi

Zenkutsu dachi is a karate stance. Pronounced 'zen-cut-so-datch'. It is a long forward stance of which the dimensions are as follows, the length of the stance between the front and rear leg should be at least two shoulders wide. The width of the stance between the left and right feet should be of at least one shoulders width. Both feet should be pointed forward, and the rear leg stretched out to make the stance appear long. The front knee should be bent to allow a larger proportion of your weight upon it and also to make the stance appear quite low.

Zenkutsu Dachi is found in many of the traditional Martial Arts originating from Asia, and is used extensively in karate as the long fighting stance. The stance can be used for moving forward with lunge style attacks and also for kicking from off the rear leg.

Initially this might be a difficult stance to master due to the length and the 'sinking' down lowness, but with good practise your Zenkutsu Dachi should help develop the muscles of the leg especially the thighs and calf muscles. This stance is found in dozens of Katas.
