Yoko Geri

Yoko Geri is a karate kick. Pronounced 'yo-ko-gery'. The side kick of Yoko Geri is found in most styles of Karate and oriental Martial Arts.

The kick is performed by first bringing up the knee to the front similar to the other karate kicks and knee strikes. From the knee up position, the leg is thrust out to the side to strike an opponent on the side. The same strike can be used to attack an opponent that is directly in front of you by first transitioning the body into a sideways stance such as Kiba Dachi or Shika Dachi.

Looking to the side is important just before you kick out, not only for a visual indication of your opponent but looking towards your opponent will also give slightly better reach though body mechanics.

In most karate styles the Yoko Geri Side Kick is usually performed fast and with a good snapping or thrusting action. Regular practise of this technique will help with speed, power and balance all in one technique.
