Soto Uke

Soto Uke is a karate block. Pronounced 'so-toe-hookey'. This block is found in many Martial Arts, Self Defense and Karate systems originating from Asia including Shotokan and Go Ju styles of karate. Soto Uke is a singe arm outside hooking block used to protect the head and chest area of the upper body.

Using a tight fist, place one hand out to the side of your head, similar to the position that you would answer a telephone but try to keep the fist slightly out and away from your head. With the elbow pointed out to the side the block them commences by moving across the front area of the body, keeping the arm upright until your elbow can travel no further.

This technique can also be used as a decent strike across the face of your opponent with the same outward to inwards hooking motion of the blocking technique.
