Taigyoko Nidan

Taigyoko Nidan

The second GKR kata of Taigyoko Nidan follows on from the previous kata but introduces the front kick and reverse punch into the equation. The floor pattern or embussen is exactly the same, the move count is also identical. These Taigyoko kata found in the Go Kan Ryu school or karate should not be confused with the shotokan kata of Taikyoku, the pair of kata are very similar but also have distinct differences.

Mark Brown, the blind Karate Instructor of Mill Hill Dojo demonstrates the kata in the video, it is worth noting that in a real karate class, the stances would be much lower and longer, unfortuanly we do not quite have the width to perform the kata to its maximum length so instead Sensei Brown is using the slightly shorter stance of Han Zenkutus Dachi, meaning short front stance as opposed to the full length forward stance of Zenkutsu Dachi.

While most students will be eager to ditch these initial kata in order to start learning more complex karate kata from their style, it is of vital importance that you revisit these kata often as the Taigyoko kata still remain very important for building your karate skill.
