Chuge Uke

Chuge Uke is a karate block. Pronounced 'chew-gee-hooky'. This is basically two blocks been performed at the same time. With one arm, a Gedan Barai lower block is employed, while the opposing arm uses the Uchi Uke upper block. The two blocks are then used in a single motion were one block swaps into the other.

Many traditional styles of karate do not use this block, and many will then presume that the concept of Chuge Uke is a relatively modern one, however the art of double blocking, which would originally have been a fast counter strike was used right back in the beginning of the early teachings of traditional karate but for some reason has been excluded from many of the teachings of today's modern styles.

The action of using a double block like Chuge Uke could be stop one punch from an opponent whilst simultaneously striking that opponent to the groin, or the reserve theory which would be stopping an attackers kick whilst striking out at the head of the attacker.
